about:
My name is Peyton Hatchett and I am a practicing photographer based between Austin, TX and Chicago, IL. My work focuses on surrealism in the interest of evaluating and redefining human reality and perception. My philosophies are based on feminist and existentialist mentalities, in combination with a desire for receptive and introspective rationalities, and to encourage the complex consideration of a simple question: why?
By stripping ‘reality’ down to its core within the photographic frame and analyzing the interactions that construct it, I can recontextualize all that is considered visceral, explicit, grotesque, or uncanny. I challenge myself to represent various ‘taboos’ as compelling, and even empowering. I strive to provoke perception shifts rooted in a deeper understanding of one’s own unconscious, thus a heightened awareness of the self. My practice is currently focused on topics of destruction, obscurity, and the organic in contemplating mortality, intimacy, and the human condition from a feminine perspective. Within these objectives, I search for enlightenment through photographic performances. Using techniques of masking, I simultaneously withhold and reveal the context of my individual existence. I hope my work encourages others to reflect on their own perception and worldly understanding, also discovering empowerment within their own bodies, minds, and lives.
